Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he left at least $4bn balance sheet generated from his companies in 1998 before joining politics, saying he didn't start life as a politician but businessman.  The former Abia governor said before 1998, he built business entities, particularly in the media, oil, and gas sector, shipping, airlines, and others.  In a social media post, Sen. Kalu said he had enough resources to fund his former party the PDP, when he joined politics in 1998. Kebbi Hosts Mass Wedding For 300 Divorcees, Widows  Over 300 divorcees, widows, and indigents have celebrated matrimony in a mass wedding sponsored by the Kebbi State Government.  The wedding which took place at the Abdullahi Fodio palace in Gwandu Emirate, Birnin Kebbi on Sunday, was organised by the state government under Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris, the governor's wife, through her initiative, the Nafisa Nasir Development Foundation.  Governor Nasir Idris, overseeing the ceremony, encouraged the couples to foster friendship and be confidants to one another.  The governor, who was represented by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman-Ankwe, announced plans for periodic mass weddings to unite less privileged individuals as husbands and wives. Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested Bello Mohammed, a 28-year-old suspected kidnapper from Zamfara State, in Kaduna State. He is accused of killing Nabeeha, who was kidnapped along with her family members in Bwari, FCT, Abuja. Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the Divisional Police Officer, Tafa Division, acting on intelligence, raided a hotel in the Tafa area of Kaduna and apprehended Bello with N2.25 million, suspected to be proceeds from ransoms collected from kidnapping victims in the area. Adejobi disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of the gang that kidnapped the family members of Barrister Ariyo in Bwari, FCT, on 2nd January 2024. Supreme Court affirms 5-year jail term for Lawan over $3m bribery saga

The Supreme Court, on Friday, upheld the judgement that convicted and sentenced the former Chairman of the then House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy probe, Mr. Farouk Lawan, to five years in prison for bribery. The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel, dismissed as lacking in merit, an appeal the former lawmaker, who has been in prison custody since 2021, filed to challenge his conviction. Lawan had among other things, contended that he was not allowed to make a plea of allocutus (plea for leniency) by the trial court before it jailed him. However, in its lead judgement that was prepared by Justice Inyang Okoro but read on Friday by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the Supreme Court said it was “crystal clear that failure of the trial court to call for allocution, did not vitiate the sentence passed on the Appellant.” It will be recalled that a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Apo had on June 22, 2021, sentenced the former lawma...

Canada announces new restrictions on work permits for Nigerians and other international students, spouses The Canadian Government has annou nced a two-year cap on the number of new study permits issued to Nigerians and other international students.  Immigration Minister Marc Miller who disclosed this on Monday, January 22, said for 2024, the cap is expected to result in approximately 364,000 approved study permits, a decrease of 35% from 2023.  In addition to the cap, the Canadian government will also require international students applying for a permit to provide an attestation letter from a province or territory.  Miller also announced changes to the post-graduation work permit program, starting that from September, international students who begin a program that is part of a curriculum licensing arrangement — where a private college has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college — will no longer be eligible for a post-graduation work permit...

POLICE investigations have revealed that Former Zambia Airforce Commander and ex-minister, retired Lieutenant General Ronald Shikapwasha was shot and k!lled by wife Jane Lusengo. The 73-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with m@rder today, January 19, 2024, following an investigation into the incident that occurred at their residence in Ibex Lusaka on Sunday, January 14. Police allege that Mrs. Shikapwasha used a double-barreled shotgun with serial number 168462 to shoot her husband in the abdomen, causing a fatal wound.  Lt General Shikapwasha later died at Maina Soko Military Hospital on January 15 at 21:40 hours. The man was alleged to have picked up a cutlass from the church altar and given the worshiper a deep cut. The victim was rushed to a hospital and is responding to treatment.
