The Borno State Police Command on Saturday averted the theft of some train coaches at the Maiduguri Railway Terminus. The source said, "A suspected theft of train coaches of the Nigerian Railway Corporation was foiled at the Maiduguri Railway Terminus following a tip-off by Good Samaritans. The police also apprehended the suspects." When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mahmood Yakubu, denied knowledge of the incident but asked our correspondent to reach the regional manager for details. However, when dialled, the telephone number of the regional manager indicated that it was switched off. A 40-year old man, Mohammed Umar has confessed to d£filing a 12-year old girl after he offered her N1000, but insisted the interco¥rse was consensual. It is reported that Umar, a father of 20 children, allegedly thr£at£ned to k!11 the girl if she disclosed the affair. The incident reportedly happened at Gusupan in the Toungo LGA of Adamawa State. He was said to have made the confession while being interrogated by the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje on Friday. A bill recommending a fine of N50,000 to be paid by parents who fail to provide their children with primary and secondary school education has passed first reading at the Senate. The Red Chamber also recommended free meals for every child in the country. The bill proposed by Senator Orji Kalu titled; ‘Compulsory free Universal Basic Education Act 2004, Section 2’, according to Punch. The section stated that “governments at all levels in the country, shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age.” “Every parent shall ensure that his child or ward attends and completes his primary school education and junior secondary school education by endeavouring to send the child to primary and junior secondary schools. The act also recommended p¥nishments for parents who contravene the rule.
