Power Is Political, But Solar Is Personal

Image
Orjiako Ikechukwu Kingsley For Nigeria’s business community, electricity is no longer an infrastructure issue. It is a cost structure problem. Despite over two decades of power sector reforms , grid electricity remains unreliable and insufficient. Installed generation capacity sits above 13,000 megawatts yet effective available power often falls below 4,000 megawatts for a population exceeding 220 million. For firms trying to scale operations, that gap is not theoretical because it shows up in balance sheets. The economic consequences are well documented. The World Bank estimates that power outages cost Nigerian businesses between 5 and 10 per cent of annual sales, with small and medium enterprises bearing the heaviest burden. Manufacturing firms routinely report energy as their second-highest operating expense after labour. Historically diesel generators filled the gap. Today that model is under strain. Since the removal of fuel subsidies and the liberalisation of the foreign ...

South-East Lags Behind in Federal Student Loan Uptake as NELFUND Data Shows Sharp Regional Gap

Image
South-East Records Lowest Applications for NELFUND Student Loans as Government Flags ‘Lack of Interest’ New data from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) covering May 2024 to October 2025 has revealed that institutions in the South Eastern region account for some of the lowest application numbers for the Federal Government’s interest-free student loan scheme — despite the programme being designed to expand access to higher education nationwide. The top 10 institutions with the highest application volumes are dominated by schools in the South-West , North-Central , and North-West , raising concerns about a widening regional disparity in access to the loan scheme. Government officials say that the low turnout from the South-East is due primarily to a “lack of interest” from students in the region. However, analysts point to a combination of deeper socio-economic and cultural factors that may be shaping the trend. Factors Driving the Low Application Rate in the South-East 1. Strong...

“Terrorists Vow to Kidnap Soldiers, Politicians Next — ‘Government Can’t Stop Us’”

Image
Terrorists responsible for the recent abductions of students in Kebbi and Niger States have issued a chilling new threat, boasting that they are now prepared to extend their operations beyond vulnerable schoolchildren. According to their latest message, in a video the group claims they will soon begin kidnapping soldiers, security operatives, and even high-profile politicians , insisting that “there is nothing the government can do about it.” This alarming declaration comes amid a renewed wave of insecurity across Northern Nigeria, where armed groups have intensified attacks on rural communities, ambushed security personnel, and targeted schools despite ongoing military operations. Security analysts warn that this bold threat reflects the terrorists’ growing confidence and the weakness of current counter-terrorism responses. Many fear it could signal a dangerous escalation—one that places not only civilians but the nation’s leadership and defense institutions at heightened risk. T...

Justice Omotosho Sentences Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment

Image
Justice Omotosho Sentences Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment: What This Means for Nigeria and Its Institutions The sentencing of Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment by Justice Omotosho marks a defining moment in Nigeria’s legal and political landscape. Beyond the courtroom, the decision underscores the complex relationship between national security, civil liberties, and the capacity of state institutions to manage deep-rooted political tensions. At its core, the ruling reflects the judiciary’s effort to assert the rule of law amid persistent separatist agitation and security challenges in the South-East. However, it also places enormous responsibility on Nigeria’s judicial and political institutions to demonstrate fairness, transparency, and adherence to constitutional standards—especially at a time when public trust remains fragile. The judgment will inevitably shape Nigeria’s international image. For many observers, it will serve as a test of the country’s commitment to human rights, due...
