Pharmacists Urge Federal Government to Regulate Online Health Influencers Amid Rising Misinformation

Drugs picture

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and healthcare stakeholders across the country have issued an urgent call to the Federal Government, demanding immediate regulatory oversight on social media health influencers. The push comes amid growing concerns over the unregulated promotion of prescription drugs, unverified herbal remedies, and dubious medical supplements across popular platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

Pharmacy leaders warn that the unchecked dissemination of medical advice by digital content creators without professional medical training is fueling self-medication, antibiotic resistance, and severe adverse drug reactions among unsuspecting Nigerians.

The Rise of Digital Health Content and Its Dangers

In recent years, social media algorithms have propelled "health and wellness" content creators into viral fame. While some leverage their platforms for public health education, a significant portion of non-licensed influencers promote unregulated products, miraculous "detox remedies," and controlled pharmaceutical substances often driven by corporate sponsorships or affiliate marketing arrangements.
Speaking at a recent health policy forum in Abuja, professional pharmacists highlighted that many popular wellness influencers regularly endorse specialized medicines, ranging from weight-loss injections and hormonal therapies to prescription-strength skin-lightening creams and unregistered herbal concoctions.
"We are witnessing a dangerous trend where algorithmic reach is replacing professional diagnosis," stated senior representatives from the pharmaceutical sector. "A content creator with a million followers can post a 30-second video claiming a prescription drug cured their ailment, leading thousands of viewers to purchase and ingest that medicine without knowing their own contraindications or underlying health conditions."
Pharmacists noted that hospital emergency rooms across major urban centers are increasingly treating patients suffering from acute liver injury, kidney damage, and severe allergic reactions caused by self-prescribed remedies recommended by online influencers.

Core Demands from Professional Bodies

To mitigate these risks, the PSN, alongside the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) and civil society groups, has outlined key regulatory measures for the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON):

Mandatory Licensing & Credentials: Enforce clear guidelines that prohibit individuals without verifiable healthcare credentials from prescribing, recommending, or providing clinical advice regarding human medicines online.

Ad-Disclosure & Sponsorship Transparency: Require content creators to clearly label any paid promotional content, affiliate links, or sponsored health reviews, holding both creators and brands legally responsible for misleading health claims.

Collaboration with Big Tech Platforms: Partner with social media networks to flag, demote, or remove content promoting falsified medicines, off-label prescription uses, or unregistered health supplements lacking NAFDAC approval.

Public Enlightenment Campaigns: Launch national digital literacy campaigns educating citizens on the dangers of seeking medical guidance from unverified digital creators rather than licensed practitioners.

Government Response and Existing Digital Health Frameworks

The appeal coincides with recent steps taken by the Federal Government to modernize digital health infrastructure. Under the leadership of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the government officially unveiled the Electronic Pharmacy (E-Pharmacy) Regulations 2026.

The regulatory framework aims to establish a safe national e-pharmacy ecosystem, curbing the online distribution of counterfeit drugs and establishing clear standards for licensed digital pharmaceutical operations.

While acknowledging the rollout of the e-pharmacy guidelines, pharmacists emphasize that regulating digital pharmacies solves only half the problem. Oversight must expand to cover individual content creators who act as the primary marketing channel driving traffic toward illegal vendors and unapproved treatments.
Government officials have assured stakeholders that inter-agency task forces involving health regulators, consumer protection bodies, and communications authorities are actively reviewing strategies to address digital health misinformation without stifling legitimate public discourse or digital innovation.

Looking Ahead

As digital communication continues to reshape healthcare access, the consensus among medical professionals is clear: innovation must not compromise public safety. Pharmacists maintain that establishing boundaries for online health influencers is a non-negotiable step toward safeguarding patient well-being, preserving public trust in clinical science, and building a responsible healthcare landscape.
