Police Suspend Tinted Glass Enforcement After Meeting with Nigerian Bar Association

Abuja, Nigeria — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetoku, Ph.D., NPM, has announced a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991 following a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The NBA delegation, led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, met with the police leadership to deliberate on issues surrounding the enforcement of the tinted glass regulation and the need for cooperation between the Police and the legal community in ensuring respect for the rule of law.

During the engagement, both parties held robust discussions on matters of mutual concern, emphasizing the importance of synergy in upholding justice and promoting public confidence in law enforcement.

Although the Nigeria Police Force clarified that no court order currently restrains it from enforcing the Act, the IGP stated that, in consideration of public interest and out of respect for the NBA, enforcement will be put on hold pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

To further deepen collaboration, a joint Police–NBA Committee has been inaugurated to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in matters relating to law enforcement and citizens’ rights.

Meanwhile, the Police have urged all motorists and vehicle owners to use the suspension period to regularize their documentation and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations governing the use of tinted or shaded vehicle glasses in Nigeria.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to enforce existing laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for the rights of all citizens, while maintaining constructive engagement with key stakeholders in the justice sector.
