PDP Fixes National Convention for March 28, 29 in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention, to be held in Abuja, where new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party will be elected.

The decision was taken on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the 105th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party held in Abuja.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NEC said it unanimously reconfirmed and ratified all resolutions reached at the party’s Emergency 104th NEC meeting held on December 7, 2025, stressing that all actions taken pursuant to those resolutions remain lawful, binding, and valid.

The Committee reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, describing them as the foundation of constitutional democracy in Nigeria. NEC also welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the party’s leadership and administrative structure.

According to the communiqué, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

to recognize the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, and NEC urged INEC and all relevant institutions to fully comply with the judgment in the interest of democratic order.

NEC further reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu as Secretary, noting that the committee remains the only lawful national administrative organ of the party pending the conduct of the National Convention.

As part of preparations for a smooth transition to an elected leadership, NEC approved a nationwide timetable for party congresses. Ward and Local Government Congresses are scheduled for February, while State Congresses will hold in March. The National Caretaker Committee was directed to issue detailed guidelines and modalities for the exercise in line with the PDP Constitution, INEC regulations, and existing court orders.

NEC also approved the extension of the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as State and Zonal Caretaker Committees affected, pending the conduct of the National Convention and respective congresses.

The party leadership was mandated to immediately activate Convention Sub-Committees and commence full logistical and administrative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible convention.

Calling for unity, NEC urged party members at all levels to remain disciplined and loyal, avoid actions capable of undermining party cohesion, and place the collective interest of the PDP above personal ambitions.

The Committee expressed confidence that the resolutions of the 105th NEC meeting would strengthen internal democracy, restore stability, and reposition the PDP for future electoral success, urging members and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s ideals.

The communiqué was jointly signed by Hon. Abdulrahman Muhammed, National Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, and Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, National Secretary.
