US STATE DEPARTMENT APOLOGIZES AFTER AI-GENERATED AFRICA MAP MISLABELED NIGERIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES AT AIDS CONFERENCE
The US Department of State apologized today after displaying a map of Africa with all the country names in the wrong places during a presentation at the AIDS 2026 International Conference in Rio de Janeiro.
The incident has sparked criticism about accuracy, AI use in government, and respect for African partners.

During a session highlighting HIV work in six African countries, organizers showed a map meant to mark Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, Malawi and Cameroon.
But according to analysis and photos shared online, none of the labels matched the countries.

A photo of the map was posted by Emily Bass, an HIV specialist, on Substack. Reuters analysis found the map had "a watermark of artificial intelligence indicating it was created with OpenAI tools"
US RESPONSE
A State Department spokesperson called it "an unfortunate error caused by a team member who hastily modified the presentation just before the exhibition"
"We take full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation this caused among attendees, including our African partners," the spokesperson said.
The apology came the same day the department announced further cuts to global health funding and staff restructuring since President Donald Trump returned to office.
African delegates at the conference described the mistake as "embarrassing" and "careless." Health NGOs said it undermines trust at a time when US funding for HIV, malaria and TB programs is being reviewed.
Social media users in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa shared memes of the map with captions like "AI tried but failed Geography."
Experts warned this shows the danger of relying on AI tools without human fact-checking, especially for official government presentations.
The AIDS 2026 conference is one of the biggest global health meetings. Nigeria, Mozambique and Uganda are among the countries with the highest HIV burdens.
Accurate data and respect are critical when discussing funding and partnerships.
The State Department said it will review its presentation protocols and ensure all materials are verified by regional experts before future events.
