Latex Condoms:What You Should Know About Their Effectiveness, Safety and Efficiency
Latex condoms are the most widely used male contraceptive method globally and remain a key tool in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), health experts say.
Made from natural rubber latex, the condoms act as a physical barrier during sexual intercourse, preventing sperm from entering the vagina and reducing the transmission of infections spread through bodily fluids.
How Effective Are Latex Condoms?
When used correctly and consistently, latex condoms are up to 98 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy. However, with typical use—often affected by improper application or inconsistent use—the effectiveness drops to about 85 per cent, according to public health studies.
In terms of disease prevention, latex condoms significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. Although they are less effective against skin-to-skin infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV)and herpes, experts say they still provide meaningful protection.
Safety and Efficiency
Latex condoms are known for their durability and elasticity, allowing them to stretch without tearing when used properly. Before reaching consumers, most condoms undergo strict quality testing, including leak and air-burst checks, to ensure safety.
Their low cost, ease of use and wide availability make them one of the most accessible sexual health products worldwide.
Correct Usage Remains Crucial
Health professionals advise users to always check expiry dates, open packets carefully to avoid damage, and use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants. Oil-based substances such as petroleum jelly can weaken latex and increase the risk of breakage.
People with latex allergies are encouraged to use alternatives such as polyurethane or polyisoprene condoms.
