South Africa Overtakes Nigeria as Africa’s Largest Fuel Importer

South Africa has officially surpassed Nigeria to become Africa’s largest importer of petrol, marking a major shift in the continent’s energy landscape. According to data from energy consultancy CITAC, South Africa imported 4.2 million metric tonnes of fuel in the first quarter of 2025, outpacing Nigeria’s 3.1 million metric tonnes.

This change follows the ramp-up of production at the Dangote Industries "Refinery" in Lagos, which has drastically reduced Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel. Before the refinery became operational, Nigeria was the continent’s top importer of refined petroleum products, spending billions of dollars annually to meet local demand despite being a major crude oil producer.

Now, with the Dangote Refinery refining millions of litres of fuel daily, Nigeria has moved closer to achieving energy self-sufficiency — a development that many see as a turning point for the nation’s economy and industrial growth.

Thanks to the vision and investment of Aliko Dangote, Nigeria is witnessing a historic transformation in its energy sector. May God continue to protect Dangote and shame the enemies of Nigeria who do not wish to see the country progress.
