Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has stated that the ingenuity demonstrated by young Nigerians involved in cybercrime, popularly referred to as Yahoo Boys, can be redirected toward productive national growth if the government invests in proper mentorship, digital skills training, and job creation.
Obi explained that many of these youths are driven into fraudulent activities due to unemployment, lack of opportunities, and government negligence in the technology sector. According to him, Nigeria’s tech-savvy population is one of its greatest assets and should not be wasted.
He emphasized the need for strategic investments in ICT hubs, startup funding, and innovation-driven education that can convert raw digital skills into legitimate careers in cybersecurity, fintech, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and global remote work opportunities.
Obi insisted that national development depends on empowering youths with the right tools and policies rather than criminalizing them without alternatives. He urged the Nigerian government to prioritize economic reforms that transform the country into a competitive tech powerhouse.
“Instead of condemning them entirely, guide them. Channel their intelligence into technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These young people can become job creators and drivers of Nigeria’s digital economy,” Obi said.
The statement continues to spark conversations across social media, with many Nigerians agreeing that digital literacy programs, mentorship, and strong accountability systems are crucial to reducing cybercrime while boosting national productivity.
