Putin Prepares Nuclear Missile Test Ahead of High-Stakes Meeting With Trump in Alaska
Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly preparing to test a new nuclear-armed cruise missile ahead of his scheduled meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Alaska. Satellite imagery shows increased activity at Russia’s key nuclear testing facility in recent weeks.
Increased Activity at Novaya Zemlya Nuclear Test Site
Russia’s Pankovo nuclear test site, located on the Barents Sea archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, has seen a surge in personnel, equipment, ships, and aircraft. Analysts say the movements resemble preparations seen during earlier tests of the 9M730 Burevestnik, also known as the “Storm Petrel.”
A Western security source indicated that Moscow may be preparing another test of the Burevestnik missile, which Russia claims has virtually unlimited range due to its nuclear-powered propulsion system.
Satellite Images Reveal Military Build-Up
According to Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies, satellite images show a significant influx of vehicles and logistical supplies at the launch area.
“We can see all of the activity at the test site, including huge amounts of supplies coming in to support operations and movement at the missile launch area,” Lewis said. He added that a test could occur as soon as this week.
Putin-Trump Talks Scheduled in Anchorage
The reported missile preparations come just days before scheduled talks between Putin and Trump at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting is set for 11:30am local time (8:30pm BST).
Putin is currently in Magadan in Russia’s Far East, attending a regional meeting before traveling to Alaska.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said, “I am President, and he’s not going to mess around with me,” suggesting a firm stance ahead of the discussions.
Potential Follow-Up Summit With Ukraine
Trump indicated that a second summit could follow immediately after his meeting with Putin, potentially involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders.
However, concerns remain in Ukraine about possible agreements being reached without Kyiv’s participation. Oleksiy Goncharenko, a Member of Parliament for Odesa, warned against any deal that excludes Ukraine.
“Nobody can decide anything about Ukraine without Ukraine. If we lose US support, this would be a disaster,” he said.
