 You see and hear these brand names almost every day, and I know you wondered what they mean. To answer your curiosities, we brought to you a very informative list that explains meanings of the world’s most popular brands. Have a good read.

1. Nike:

Nike naturally appeals to athletes that have first place in their sights. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek goddess of victory.

2. Addidas:

Contrary to popular belief, Addidas does not mean "All Day I Dream About Sports", instead it is a portmanteau of the founder's name, Adolf (Adi) Dassler. 

3. Samsung:

In Korean, 'sam' means three and 'sung' means star. So Samsung literally means three stars. 

4. Sony:

'Sonus' is the latin word for sound, but the name also comes from the owners considering themselves 'sonny2 boys', a borrowed word in Japanese that suggests 'smart young men'.

5. Amazon: 

Jeff Bezos got the name of his brand after searching through the dictionary. He settled at amazon because it was a river considered to be the biggest in the world, as he hoped his company would be big.

6. Volvo: 

Volvo is a latin word, meaning 'I roll'. Volvo was founded as a subsidiary of a ball bearing company.

7. Toyota:

Originally named after its founder 'Toyoda Kiichiro', the company's name was changed to Toyota in 1937. Among the reasons for the name change was that 'toyoda' literally means 'fertile rice paddies'. 

8. Fanta:

It didn't take much imagination to come up with the name 'Fanta'. At one session, the head of Coca-Cola asked his team to use their 'Fantasie' which is a German word for imagination.

9. Durex:

British-born condom is an abbreviation of 'durable reliable excellence'.
