Lisa Marie Presley was an American singer and songwriter. She was the child of singer and actor Elvis Presley and actress Priscilla Presley, as well as the sole heir to her father's estate after her grandfather and her great-grandmother died.
The singer died in January from a "sequelae of a small bowel syndrome obstruction", which she developed after she underwent Bariatic surgery several years ago, according to an autopsy report. She was 54.
Her last public appearance was two days before her death, at the Golden Globes.
Bariatric surgery — a collective term for gastric bypass and other weight loss surgeries — involves surgically modifying the digestive system, typically the stomach and small intestine, in order to reduce the amount of food an individual can eat and absorb.
As noted in the report, the obstruction was in the form of a strangulated small bowel caused by adhesions that developed after her weight-loss surgery. This complication is seen in about 6% of all bariatric type surgery.
