The story of this case will explain it to you. This man is successful and his wife is also successful. The husband and wife live in Lagos with their children. They normally have the usual disagreements that husbands and wives do have from time to time. On this occasion, they had one more disagreement.
The man travelled to their village and reported his wife to the kinsmen. The kinsmen sent a letter to his wife, telling her to come to the village to explain herself. The woman wrote back to the kinsmen. In her reply, she warned them to never contact her over such things. And she told them that if they tried it next time, she would deal with them.
The kinsmen read her reply. They didn't know what to do. They called another meeting and summoned the husband. When the husband came, they told him that the council of the umunna had imposed a fine on him - one goat, three fowls, three kegs of wine. He asked them why they were fining him. They told him it was because of the insult they received from his wife, that he must pay for it. The man was confused.
The wife did not know what was going on until one evening. The man called his wife and told her that the Umunna fined her a goat and other things. She called a relative of theirs. The relative told her the truth - that Umunna did not fine her, that Umunna did not even mention her name, that it was the man that Umunna fined. The wife told her husband that she was not going to pay any fine because nobody fined her. The man insisted that the wife must contribute half of the fine because she was the one that insulted his kinsmen. The woman refused.
Now, the lady brought the matter to DPA because her husband continued to disturb her about her share of the fine. We told the lady to give us the name of the leader of her husband's kinsmen. We will contact them and tell them to double the fine for the man.
When you have money and some education, no man can mess with you. The true enemy of women is poverty and lack of education. That is why your husband doesn't want you to be richer than he is or for you to join DPA. DPA will educate you. And once educated, you cannot be threatened anyhow.
