Fresh concerns have emerged within Nigeria’s film industry following the sudden disappearance of veteran Nollywood actress Cynthia Okereke, as new revelations indicate that her bank account was allegedly emptied shortly after she went missing.
The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, disclosed this development while providing an update on the situation involving Okereke and fellow actor Clemson Cornell, popularly known as Agbogidi.
According to Rollas, the guild is yet to officially confirm whether the actors were kidnapped, noting that there has been no direct communication from suspected abductors.
“We have not confirmed the kidnap as it were. The only thing we know is that all the money in Cynthia Okereke’s account was cleared this morning,” he said.
He further explained that the guild is expecting some form of contact or demand that would clarify whether the situation is indeed a kidnapping or another form of incident.
Earlier, the Director of Communications of the guild, Monalisa Chinda-Coker, had raised alarm in an official statement, suggesting that the two actors were suspected to have been abducted.
The development has sparked widespread concern among actors and filmmakers, particularly regarding safety on movie sets, especially in remote locations.
“Because of this sad development, the national president of the guild has instructed all actors to avoid going to the outskirts of cities to film except full security cover is provided,” the statement noted.
Reports indicate that Okereke and Cornell went missing after leaving a film location in Ozalla Town, located in Enugu State. Family members reportedly confirmed that both actors failed to return home after the shoot, triggering panic and uncertainty within the industry.
The incident has once again highlighted growing security concerns across Nigeria, with stakeholders calling for stronger safety measures to protect actors and crew members working on location.
As investigations continue, members of the film community and the public alike remain hopeful for their safe return.
