GLASGOW 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES END TODAY AS TEAM NIGERIA CHASES FINAL MEDALS.
ABUJA - The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially close today, bringing an end to 11 days of competition that began July 23.
About 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations competed across 10 sports and 6 para sports.
Nigeria came into Glasgow with high hopes after finishing 7th on the medal table in Birmingham 2022 with 11 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
FOLASHADE OLUWAFEMIAYO - Reigning Commonwealth para powerlifting champion and world-record holder, defending her title.
KAYINSOLA AJAYI - Sprint sensation and one of Africa’s fastest men, a top medal hope.
Team Nigeria trained in Aberdeen before the Games. Confidence was boosted by FG’s announcement of $3,000 for every Nigerian gold medalist.
Officials said Nigeria is targeting medals in athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and para sports.

Before departure, President Tinubu gave Team Nigeria a grand send-off at the Presidential Villa. Represented by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, the President urged athletes to compete with honour.
"Medals are valuable, but integrity is priceless. As you wear the green and white, remember that you represent over 200 million Nigerians. Compete fairly, uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, avoid all forms of misconduct, including doping, and make the nation proud”.
At the same event, PUMA was unveiled as Team Nigeria’s new kit partner for the Commonwealth Games. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko said the partnership represents commitment to giving athletes world-class support.
The Games come at a time when Commonwealth countries are debating the future of the event. Glasgow stepped in as host after the original 2026 host withdrew due to costs.
For Nigeria, a strong showing in Glasgow is important for morale and for preparing athletes for the 2028 Olympics.
The closing ceremony holds tonight at Celtic Park. Nigeria’s flag bearer is expected to be one of the medalists. The next Commonwealth Games will be in 2030.
