The Federal Government is set to approve a new uniformed registration fee of ₦50,000 for candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations starting from next year.

According to reports seen by Visblog the new fee will take effect from the 2027 examination year and it is aimed at creating a standard registration structure for both examination bodies.
The approval means that starting 2027, candidates registering for either WAEC or NECO Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE) are expected to pay a uniformed fee of ₦50,000.

The announcement has generated widespread reactions among parents, students education stakeholders, and many social media users, many of whom have expressed concerns about the effect of the policy if it is implemented at a time when many families are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

The proposed hike has triggered widespread debate on social media and among education advocates nationwide. While some argue that a review of exam fees is justified due to inflation and higher running costs, others say the increase will put more financial strain on Nigerian families and could limit access to education.

Stakeholders in the education sector will keep talking with the government to find ways to reduce the pressure on parents and students before the new policy kicks in.
