“STOP DE-MARKETING THE UNIVERSITY” VC WARNS. CALLS FOR TRUCE BETWEEN FG AND ASUU
The rate at which some Students of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), take pleasure in de-marketing the Institution at the slightest opportunity on social media has become a source of worry to the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, so much so that the Vice Chancellor has warned that Management will not hesitate to sanction those involved in accordance with the extant rules and regulations of the University, if they do not stop.
The Vice-Chancellor wondered why some students who swore to abide by their matriculation oaths will choose to always spread negative and unverified information about the University and ignoring the many achievements and positive developments in the Institution.
Speaking to the executives of the Student bodies of SUG and SRC in his office, he noted that there is no Institution or organization that does not experience challenges at some point, but the ability to navigate through such difficult terrains and overcome the challenges, is the hallmark of strong leadership and this the Management under his watch has been doing, inorder to restore the University as the number one citadel of Academic Excellence and Service, where peace, justice, and tranquility reign.
The Vice-Chancellor used the forum to call on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the lingering industrial action embarked upon by ASUU for the sake of our children whose future is being endangered everyday because of the inability of the two parties to reach an agreement.
He recalled that his administration before the strike commenced had completed a full academic session within few months of resumption, paid salaries regularly as well as some months of inherited arrears of salaries, hosted the 27th and 28th convocation ceremony, maintained uninterrupted academic activities, initiated new developmental projects in the Umuahia and main campuses, and sustained the monthly Inaugural lectures and other programmes of the University. He regretted the losses in both human and material resources as well as in the academic calendar brought upon by the industrial action.
The Vice-Chancellor called on the Federal Government to prioritize education at all levels and look into the demands of ASUU while urging the Union to reciprocate every step made by Government to resolve the crisis which has taken a negative toll on the education sector in particular.
